2014.03.15 - SXSW2014 - Day 5 - Part 2 (Evening)
The Whiskey Sisters @ St. Vincent de Paul
"Southern rock with a decidedly feminine twist, more Heart than Skynyrd, but no less stirring." - Jim Caligiuri, Austin Chronicle
Things were in full swing over at the parking lot stage. The Mother Truckers were always a wildly entertaining act, and singer Teal Collins has taken all that energy along to her new project.

Massy Ferguson @ Guero's
It was time for some food, and the combination of cheap beer and tacos at Guero's was just what I needed. And as a bonus I got another chance to see Massy Ferguson.
American Aquarium @ Continental Club
“At a time when so many bands are busy dicking around with art school interpretations of roots music, trying to reinvent the wheelbarrow and create an avant-garde Americana revolution, it’s refreshing to hear American Aquarium throw a fastball right down the middle.” - Peter Grumbine, No Depression
I had high expectations for this show: I had never seen American Aquarium live, and as I own several of their albums I was looking forward to seeing them finally on stage. I might have been getting to tired or jaded at after 5 days of non-stop music, but while the performance was solid, I wasn't as impressed as I thought I might be.

Why Not Satellite @ Lamberts
"Why Not Satellite traces its origins to the punk/new wave scene at Raul's in Austin. The band includes former members of Standing Waves [and] the Reivers." - Band bio
Very cool and entertaining set by Why Not Satellite - Larry Seaman, Randy Franklin, Cindy Toth and Steve McCarthy.

Lily & The Parlour Tricks @ Esther's Follies
"Lily & The Parlour Tricks' influences range from The Andrews Sisters and The Everly Brothers to Nine Inch Nails and The White Stripes. They pay respect to the past, indulge in the present, and march steadily into the future with their idiosyncratic brew of siren-song harmonies, thundering bass + drums and wickedly distorted guitar." - Band bio
The 11pm slot didn't have any "must-see" showcases, at least not in the area where I was. Esther's Follies always offers a chance to sit down and enjoy good sound and lights.
The Tontons @ Dirty Dog Bar
It seemed fitting to end SXSW 2014 they way I started it - at a Tontons showcase. Due to the delays I only got to see a few minutes of their Tuesday showcase, so it was great to see them doing a full set. And that was it: I briefly contemplated staying on for Wild Child, but decided that seeing 70+ showcases in 5 days was enough...
